Granholm Releases New Budget, Restores Cuts to Higher Education
by
12 Feb 2010 2:44pm
Governer Jennifer Granholm and State Budget Director Robert Emerson presented the 2011 executive budget recommendation on Thursday. Among many changes, the budget includes more funding for schools, including the restoration of the Michigan Promise scholarship. The scholarship will be a $4000 tax credit, available to any student that completes a degree and works for at least one year in Michigan.

The priorities of the budget are "investing in education and job-creation," Granholm said. "No investment will produce greater returns than the one we make in educating our children in terms of creating new businesses and new jobs for Michigan." She also said that she would veto any budget that makes further cuts to education.

Granholm urged the Legislature to pass a budget by July 1, to allow organizations such as universities to make their spending plans early on.
