33rd Ann Arbor Folk Festival Comes to Hill Auditorium This Weekend
by
29 Jan 2010 12:56pm
The Ann Arbor Folk Festival will have its first group of performances at Hill Auditorium tonight, kicking off a two-night festival bringing well-known acts and up-and-comers alike.

The Festival, now in its 47th year, is the main fundraiser for The Ark, a nonprofit organization and folk venue in downtown Ann Arbor. Ticket sales for regular performances throughout the year only account for about 70% of The Ark's costs - the rest of its revenue comes from members, donors, volunteers and sponsors like those sponsoring this weekend's events.

Performances this year include popular acts such as Iron & Wine and the duo of Jay Farrar (of Son Volt) and Benjamin Gibbard (of Death Cab for Cutie). The event also features less popular artists in hopes that people will come to discover new music. Friday evening focuses on those bringing a more progressive sound to the genre while Saturday night will feature more traditional folk artists. Both shows are sold out.
