There was a shooting at 2:30 p.m. ET at Fort Hood Military Base in Texas. Twelve are reported dead and 31 wounded.
The primary shooter, Major Nidal Malik Hasan (age 39-40), was shot by a local police officer, and is now in custody and in stable condition. It is reported that handguns were used in the shooting.
The shooting occurred at the Soldier Readiness Center.
President Obama spoke at an Interior conference and commented on the shootings:
"A number of American soldiers have been killed and even more have been wounded in a horrific outburst of violence."
"It is horrifying that they should come under fire on an army base on American soil."
"I would ask all Americans to keep the men and women of Fort Hood in their prayers."
The wounded were taken to nearby hospitals.
Fort Hood is the US Army's largest US base with around 40,000 troops.
Schools in the surrounding areas were locked down.
