Eerie Green Flashes and Explosions Explained

Multiple transformers malfunctioned and exploded near the Kellogg Eye Center Friday evening between the hours of 5:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. The malfunctions caused power flickers to many nearby residents and also caused power outages at many university buildings on North Campus.

DTE Energy first responded to the scene at around 7:30 p.m., and worked through the night to restore power and fix the problem.

There were reports that a couple of power outages occurred at the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) building around 5:00 p.m. followed by an evacuation alarm around 6:00 p.m. The H.H. Dow Building, the Francois-Xavier Bagnoud (FXB) Building, and the Duderstadt Center also reportedly experienced outages.

Both Bursley and Baits residence halls lost power, but it was restored by around 3:00 a.m.

Many students said they noticed green-tinted flashes in the air and heard loud bangs that were not the result of lightning strikes. The flashes were visible as far away as Elbel Field on south campus.

Power should now be restored.

Causes of the transformer malfunctions are not yet known.
