University President Mary Sue Coleman announced in a statement today that President Barack Obama will deliver this year's spring commencement address.

"We are honored to welcome a leader of his distinction and look forward to his message," Coleman said according to the UM News Service. "We could not be happier for the graduates who will celebrate their academic achievements with the president of the United States."

Coleman also commented on how the president's "inspiring words of hope and change" have helped to motivate students and add to their enthusiasm.

The 2010 Spring Commencement will be held at Michigan Stadium on May 1st beginning at 10:00 AM. Degrees will be given out to around 3,500 undergraduate students, with close to 40,000 people in attendance.

President Obama will receive an Honorary Doctor of Laws Degree.

Obama will be the fourth sitting U.S. president to visit the Ann Arbor campus. The previous three were Lyndon B. Johnson in 1964, Gerald R. Ford in 1976, and George H.W. Bush in 1991.

Visit http://www.umich.edu/whitehouse/ for more information about past presidents who have visited the University of Michigan.

Ticket information for the commencement has yet to be announced.
