Census Competition Launched

Every 10 years a very important event comes to pass. The US Government is required by the Constitution to conduct a census, a survey to gauge how many people are living in one given area at any time. This includes everyone, including non-citizens. The census count becomes especially important when doing things like dividing up electoral districts or school systems. Even while sitting in class, students will often see professors pull up census statistics. There is only one problem, many people do not get counted. According to thecensusproject.org, each uncounted resident costs his community approximately $1200 in federal funding.

In the last census, (in the year 2000, many students in college towns such as Ann Arbor did not fill out the survey. While the overall response rate for the census was 67%, in Ann Arbor student housing districts, the rate was closer to 38%. Most attributed this to confusion about the survey or lack of time to fill it out.

The University of Michigan has come up with an idea. They are holding a contest to increase student awareness and participation in the census. To enter, any registered student may submit a video ad, up to 60 seconds long to get the attention of students on campus. Students, Staff and University Faculty will then be able to view and judge the first 250 entries on Youtube and UofM's website. Two first prize winners will get a $1000 cash prize.

The goals of the contest are twofold: (1) to remind students that their campus residence is where they live and sleep most of the time as of April 1st, and (2) encourage them to accurately complete and return census forms on time.

Census forms will be mailed in March and due by April 1st. Contest entry deadline is March 9th, voting ends March 17th and winners will be announced March 24th.
