Small Fire Damages North Campus Dorm Room
by Emily Zimmerman
25 Jan 2010 2:49pm
A fire that started in a Baits II dorm room yesterday has temporarily displaced eight University students.

The fire began at around 3:00 pm when one resident attempted to reheat food in his microwave. The food, wrapped in tin foil and Styrofoam, caught fire while still inside the appliance according to the Department of Public Safety's Diane Brown. When he tried to remove it, inflamed Styrofoam pieces broke off and caught clothes on his floor on fire.

The fire alarm system was activated and residents were evacuated immediately. Damage from heat, water, smoke, and ash affected the other rooms in the corridor and hallway. The room in which the fire originated will need "Significant repairs" before he will be able to occupy it again, according to Brown. The other students are expected to return as early as this evening.

The fire has been ruled as accidental and no housing violations or criminal charges are being filed.
