Ann Arbor/Detroit out of USA World Cup Bid

Ann Arbor, MI - Eighteen cities now sit on the short list for USA's Bid for the 2018 or 2022 World Cup. On Tuesday, the USA Bid Committee announced the new list, narrowed down from the previous list of 27 cities. Michigan soccer fans may be sad to hear this, but Detroit didn't make the cut.

On the previous list, Detroit had two stadiums under consideration: Ford Field and Michigan Stadium. With a capacity of 108,000, the Big House was the largest stadium on the list. As per FIFA rules, stadiums only need a capacity of 40,000 to meet World Cup requirements, with one exception: the stadium used for the opening and closing ceremonies needs a capacity of at least 80,000. Even with the Big House off of the list, however, 6 stadiums still remain with capacities in excess of that requirement.

Though this may seem like a shock to some, representatives for the two Michigan stadiums said they were no longer interested in consideration months ago. Dave Beachnau, executive director for Detroit Sports said that "It wouldn’t be a prudent decision to go forward based on our current economic climate" and that they "would have had to raise in excess of $30 million, and the local economy the way it is, it would have been tough.” U of M's Athletic Director Bill Martin said that costs of raising the Michigan Stadium field to accommodate soccer led to their withdrawal (both according to the Detroit Free Press).

It is possible that more cities will be eliminated before the 2018 or 2022 World Cup if the US is chosen, but the current list of the 18 cities and 21 venues on the bid are:

Atlanta: Georgia Dome
Baltimore: M&T Bank Stadium
Boston: Gillette Stadium
Dallas: Cotton Bowl, Cowboys Stadium
Denver: Invesco Field
Glendale/Phoenix: University of Phoenix Stadium
Houston: Reliant Stadium
Indianapolis: Lucas Oil Stadium
Kansas City, MO: Arrowhead Stadium
Los Angeles: Los Angeles Coliseum, Rose Bowl
Miami: Dolphin Stadium
Nashville: LP Field
New York/New Jersey: New Meadowlands Stadium
Philadelphia: Lincoln Financial Field
San Diego: Qualcomm Stadium
Seattle: Husky Stadium, Qwest Field
Tampa: Raymond James Stadium
Washington DC: FedEx Field
