UM C.S. Mott Children's Hospital and Women's Hospital is about to get some major help. Former Michigan football player (1997 Heisman trophy winner) and Green Bay Packers player Charles Woodson has pledged $2 million in support of the hospital.

The money will go to a variety of sources, one of which being the creation of the Charles Woodson Clinical Research Fund. This fund will "advance the work of researchers doing early-stage work to help children with life-threatening illnesses" says the UHS newsroom. The money will also go toward the constructing of the new C.S. Mott Children's Hospital and Women's Hospital. A lobby will be named in his honor.

The new hospital, set to open in 2012, will cost $754 million, have 1.1 million square feet of space and will feature at 12 story inpatient tower, 9 story outpatient tower (equalling 348 beds when full open), and rooftop helipad. It is expected to become a state of the art facility for both newborns, pediatric liver transplants, high risk pregnancy programs among others.

"When you visit a sick child, it puts everything into perspective," Woodson says. "Now that I have the ability to make this gift, I feel as though I'm fulfilling my role in life in a new way. I've had much to be thankful for in my life, and this is an important way for me to show my gratitude. I want other children to have as many reasons as I have had to be thankful every day."

The hospital is one of the largest construction projects in Michigan, second only to the MGM Grand Casino in Detroit. So far the U-M Health System has raised more than $50 million out of a goal of $75 million for the new facility.

"Woodson's gift will be transformative for clinical research at C.S. Mott Children's Hospital and Women's Hospital," says Valerie Castle M.D., chair of the Department of Pediatrics and Communicable Diseases and Professor, "its providing the critical seed money to establish our new research center as well as supporting our new children's hospital. We are so grateful to have Charles as part of our Mott team and we look forward to a long term partnership with him."

"Charles Woodson is not only a gifted athlete but a volunteer extraordinaire," says Patricia Warner, Associate Director and Chief Administrative Officer of the hospital.
