Michigan is getting its fair share of movie shoots these days, but it is about to experience the cinema in a different way. Ann Arbor was one of eight theatres across the nation selected to participate in the first annual Sundance Film Festival U.S.A, a satellite project of the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah. The festival is set to run from January 21-31, 2010 in Utah, but for one night, Thursday, January 28th, 2010, a filmmaker and his film will be flown to the Michigan Theatre for a showing.

The night will start at 7:30 p.m. An introductory video, featuring President of the Sundance Institute and Creator of the Festival, Robert Redford and highlights of the festival, will be shown. Festivities will continue in Utah as the socio-political documentary The Shock Doctrine will be played simultaneously

Redford first established the institute in Utah in 1981 when he gathered some friends to create an environment to foster creativity and discovery in film. In the first ‘Filmmakers/Directors Lab’ ten emerging filmmakers collaborated with leading writers and directors to create independent film projects. The idea was that out in the mountains and in this unique environment writers and directors would be able to produce exceptional inspiring works. In 1984 the project was expanded to include playwrights. The Institute is now an “internationally recognized resource for thousands of independent film, theatre, and music artists” (Sundance Institute), and the leading showcase for independent films.

The Sundance Film Festival now includes film culture events, panel discussions, youth programs, online exhibition and live music. More than 45,000 people from around the world, including many of today’s most popular actors/writers/directors participate each year. They have since decided to expand the project to include additional audiences.

“The concept behind Sundance Film Festival U.S.A. is to ignite dialogue as people across the country engage in a collective film experience. It is an extension, really of the work we have done for decades: supporting the independent voice, bringing artists to the table and inserting art more and more into the social context of now we live,” explains Redford in a press release, “We hope by speaking with artists about their work and experiencing the Festival as it is happening, audiences will be inspired to share opinions, discuss the key issues of our day and reflect on the role art plays in social change.”

The full line-up will be released in December 2010. Selections for Sundance Film Festival U.S.A. will be made shortly after that, but will be from the official slate of the Festival.

The other theatres participating in the festival include:
Coolidge Corner Theatre- Brookline, MA
Brooklyn Academy of Music- Brooklyn, NY
Music Box Theatre- Chicago, IL
Downtown Independent- Los Angeles, CA
Sundance Cinemas Madison- Madison, WI
The Belcourt Theatre- Nashville, TN
Sundance Kabuki Cinemas- San Francisco, CA

Tickets will be made available through each individual theatre’s box office.

More information will be available on the website of the Michigan Theatre and the Sundance U.S.A. website
